Pagosa Springs is located along the San Juan River, just west of the Continental Divide in southwestern Colorado.  At 7,079’ elevation and encircled from the southeast to the northwest by the snowcapped San Juan Mountains, it’s an awesomely beautiful mountain community.

The Southern Utes first named the region “Pagosah”, or healing waters, for the natural mineral hot springs at the river’s edge.  The river runs through the heart of Pagosa and the historic downtown core where there are riverside shops, restaurants and walkways.

Pagosa is the county seat for Archuleta County, one of the fastest growing regions in the state.  The town’s population is only 1,600; however, growth in the surrounding county adds another 10,000.  Many of these new residents live in Pagosa on a part-time basis.

The area’s climate is typical for the mountains with four distinct seasons, from mild summers to cold, snowy winters.  Its position on the West Slope of the Rocky Mountains places Pagosa within the arid Southwest of the U.S., and, as such, it boasts 300 sunny days with bright blue skies every year.

The primary industries in Pagosa Springs are construction, real estate, ranching, timbering and tourism.  There is also a county airport, one elementary school, one middle school and one high school.  Durango, the nearest city at 60 miles to the west, has a college.

Other major tourist attractions include fishing, whitewater rafting, downhill and cross country skiing, hiking, horseback riding, 4-wheeling, and a 27-hole public golf course.  Numerous hotels, restaurants and shopping are available as well.

Pagosa Springs is a very friendly and relaxed community.  The surrounding natural beauty and dry climate just seem to leave everyone walking around with a smile on their face and a hello for passersby!
